Avantis are definitely cool. Some people like them, some don't. The real bad asses were the R3 cars, single 4 barrel Supercharged, special heads, etc. Granatelli went 171+ with one of those. Studebaker made 9 of them in production, all the motors were done by the Granatellis, kinda like Shelby with Ford. All 9 of the R3 cars are accounted for, some restored, some survivors and some just sitting and waiting. There were also a number of Avanti's that had real R3 crate motors installed. I have several Studebaker friends that have them, including some R1 an R2 cars.

Hard to say, They don't come up for sale. But the don't get the respect of a ZL1 or Shelby.

Neither had nor will ever have an Avanti but I love these cars mainly because I sit in one quite often (relatively)!

Fifty years ago, at fifteen/sixteen, coming back from school, my cousin and I stop frequently at the Coca-Cola distributor plant in my hometown.

Park in front was a gold Avanti and without touching it we discussed every details of the car for more than half an hour each time.

One day, a white hair gentleman approach us and give us the opportunity to sit inside his car and discuss details of the interior.

Every time that we arrive, he gladly open the car for us and go back inside smiling. We thanks Mr. Dufresnes every time for the thrust he have in us, young kids!!

The next stop for us was at the Clement' shop to sit in his Gullwing Mercedes, but that's an another story!!!!

I knew I saw one on Craigslist recently.

A long way for this one to come back.

First time I saw Kelsey-Hayes Striper wheels in a magazine, late sixties/early seventies, I tough they will be perfect for an Avanti.

Over the years, I collect 4 of them and I found on the web an Avanti with these wheels on.........

That looks like there was an engine fire, then it sat for a while.   Just the way paint on the expansion tank is gone and the rust on the air cleaner and fan.  And the way the dash looks melted.

I have mentioned before that there is an expression coined by a noted restorer/rebuilder/flipper in the Studebaker world that says: "There is nothing so expensive as a cheap Avanti."  There were less than 5,000 Studebaker Avantis produced and many of them are still on the road, which makes finding Avanti Specific parts difficult.  The chassis and engine parts were common to other Studes.
