is Kerosene safe on original Quadrajet Carb for cleaning it?

I'm about to embark on rebuilding my original Quadrajet carburetor on my Chevelle.  Kit comes today and it's all the gaskets and seals, and I also popped for a new plastic float, new idle tubes, well plugs (to prevent the overnight leakdown issue with these carbs), and the new gaskets and seals are made to be compatible with today's 10% ethanol gasoline.

My parts cleaner currently has kerosene in it.  Does anyone know if kerosene is safe for the original finish on the carb?  Aside from dirt and grime, the original finish seems OK on the carb and I don't want to mess it up.  Thanks.

Kevin,

Kerosene is nasty and not EPA friendly.....I would use a safer alternative. There are many newer products that are much better and safer. Just google safe washer solvents. Plus you can even call up your local transmission shop and get the name and number of the product that they use....transmission rebuilders have there hands is solvent all day long. Plus another alternative....is sending your carb out to a carb shop....this is what I do...I don`t even mess with toxic chemicals in my garage....I send my carbs out.....they are all bench tested and restored to perfection....much easier for me.

Thanks Dan.  I did some quick research and found this stuff, so I ran out at lunch to Wal Mart and bought the gallon for $19.00.  Worth a shot.

Kevin,

That stuff is NASTY.....read the warning label. Gloves, apron, mask.....I have seen what this stuff has done to our older generation of workers....that did not know any better or did not care. NOT TO BE TAKEN LIGHTLY.

Be safe!

Dan

Kevin, I just used Super Clean, outdoors, on my carb, and it came out very clean except for a few stubborn spots. I wasn't looking for perfect to begin with, just cleaner than it was before fire-up.
Just my $0.02.

So don't dump it down the storm drain when I'm done, like I do with my used oil? Damn, what a hassle. Sorry bad joke. I will use those precautions, good tips.

Yeah at least we didn't dig up that old mine and spill all that garbage out like the EPA did :)
