My '68 Biscayne
Permalink

Hi All,

I'm *very* new to the world of classic cars and recently purchased this '68 Biscayne.  The repaint matches the original Fisher tags and the interior is said to be about 90% original.  It came off the line in Ohio as a v8 (per the VIN) and the quarter panel emblems indicate it was a 427.  Unfortunately, the current engine isn't original and it's a 454 that was produced between '71-'77 I believe (engine stamp 3999289).  The transmission is a 4-speed Muncie and I don't know if it's original.

I'm a *total* newbie, but I very much look forward to learning.  The first thing I'd like to do is better understand the various components of the car.  If someone could point me in the right direction for identifying the engine, transmission, and other major components, I would greatly appreciate it.

My main goal is to restore the car back to the original specs and learn a great deal while doing so..

Thanks,

  Chad

Welcome aboard Chad! Greetings from Detroit. Nice looking 68 you have there. This is a great place to be, there's lots of people here who know the numbers and correct parts for our cars. If you do not have them already may I suggest getting a factory assembly manual along with the 3 factory service manuals(chassis the chassis supplement and body service). I find them invaluable for process and part numbers. Those have helped me in my search for parts etc. Good luck with your restoration looking foward to your findings and updates to your car.

Chad,

Welcome aboard......great looking '68 Biscayne.

We a have another member on here that will love your '68.....as he has your twin.

Allow me to educate you.....your 427 emblems are on your Front Fender......not on the rear quarter panels.
Unless you have valid documentation or concrete owner history.....I would say your 1968 Biscayne is a 427 Clone.
Nevertheless.....still a cool and beautiful '68 Biscayne.

You can easily decode your transmission and or rear end.....there is a ton of information out there on the internet on how to do so.

Dan

@Spike: Thanks for the suggestion. I did purchase a CD that includes the 1968 GM Factory OEM Shop Manual a few weeks ago. I've been reading through it and I think it includes the documents you're referencing.

@postsedan: Total newbie.. :) Thanks for the correction. I tend to agree that this is most likely a tribute. Regardless, I love it!

Chad, Glad you found your way here. We had a good chat through Facebook last night.

Based on what Chad told me, he got that car for a bargain price through an auction. I mentioned that we had discussed it when it was for sale at the Dealer for $18k.

Chad you can find some stampings that will help identify the components in your car. On the Muncie Transmission there are stampings in the right side

Along with casting numbers on the main case that are above the Patent number

Once you have those you can decode them here to figure out the like year and date it was made and possibly what car it was first installed in; chevellestuff.net/qd/muncie.htm

For your rear end, there should be some stampings in the top of the passengers side axle tube. From the picture you sent last night your car has a 10 Bolt. If you can locate the stamping, you can decode it here: www.thecamaro.com/Decoding/Chevy-Axle-Rear-End-Decoding/Chevy-Full-Size-Rear-Axle-Codes.php

Those should give you a start on figuring out some of your cars heritage.

Welcome to 2DoorPost!

Pat

Welcome from West chester, PA!. Great 68 you got there. Ithink I might have tried to trade for this car about a year ago, was this car out of north (or south) Carolina?

Great group here and some of us are "numbers-matching geeks" of which I consider myself. Any questons once you start digging into part numbers and stampings give a shout

Yes, I purchased the car in NC. I had seen the car at a consignment shop for $18K, but luckily got it for just under $10K when I went after it at an auction last month. From what I gather I got a great deal.

That's great! I knew that car looked familiar. I did end up finding the right buyer for my drag car but I remember floating out a trade offer on your 68 since the ad said it was open to trades on drag cars back about a year ago.

Glad you found us on 2Doorpost!

Quick question: Did any of the Biscayne's come off the line with race stripes (as is done to mine)? If the day ever comes for a repaint, I think the stripe is gonna go.. I like the look of Pat's without the stripe and I also like the idea of a sleeper should I ever invest in improving performance.

Negative on the stripes. I like where you're going with the sleeper idea!
