F85 Rallye 350 Olds referral from local car show
Permalink

Hello,

I had my Rallye 350 in a local car show today (Sacramento, Ca.) and someone told me to check out this website because my Rallye is a post car.  Soooo, here I am.  Pretty neato website here though; definitely has the sleeper vibe.  As an aside, I'm building a sleeper '70 Cutlass S with a pro-gas 550+ hp BBO (not a post car so I won't submit pics).  I also pop in at classicoldsmobile.com.

Best,

-Christian.

Hi Christian,

Was nice meeting you today. I am really glad you decided to come check the place out. Hope you will continue to check in from time to time and share more info about your Olds. You may have noticed I posted some pictures of cars from the show today including yours and the 442 that was parked near the registration table. If you look at the GM forum you will see there are some other Olds projects going on.

Pat

Hi Christian, great looking Olds. More pictures please. BTW I'd like to see a few pictures of the blue Pontiac(?) beside it.

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone.  Here are a few more shots.  It's a nice driver, but definitely needs under hood detailing, more color sanding, and a repaint on the wheels since they cured to a different shade.  Car is completely numbers' matching.  I found it locally (sans recent paint) as I was searching for parts during the resto of my '70 442.  Kinda funny how the deals sometimes present themselves at the most inopportune moments...

Postsedan:  It's a column-auto.  Oddly, the car is non-a/c and contains the non-vented dash.  I had not seen that amongst other GMs until I got the Rallye.

Ryan 1969 Chevelle SS396:  No W-performance on this one, but yes, you are correct, W45 was the Rallye 350 option for '70 - it was also the code for the Hurst Olds in '68 and '69.

wauto:  70 1/2 Trans Am, Ram Air III, M20 - dad bought it new and I store it in my garage.  I just did the heater core and radio extraction - trying to find the original at parents' house.  I also store another of dad's toys on the RV access, along with my other two Olds; he keeps his two early Fords at his place.  Good thing I only live a couple of miles away...

Oh, I just remembered, here is pic of a photo of my first car ('95) of a numbers' matching '68 Olds 442...club coupe of course.  Console-equipped 400-400 and loaded with everything but power seats and trunk release.  Miss that one, especially with the glasspacks...  And it still kinda twinges me now that the stripes were all wrong, but hey...it was a better cruiser than 95% of the rest of the student body.  The only other comparable rides were a black '67 Malibu with a flowmaster'd 327 (he drilled-out the 2-chambers so it would be louder), a tired-but-very-presentable red/white '68 R/T, a turquoise '40 Chevy with a bone-stock 350 (all look but no go and sounded awful when he revved it), a mid-70s orange 'bird (probably a stock 305), and a beige '66 Malibu with a (another) flowmaster'd 327 (but he had 4.10s so he did pretty well on the street - cruisin' on the freeway was a different story...).

This was makes a none A/C Post Sedan very unique and very difficult to restore.

Dan:  Yes, I wish I would've kept the '68.  However, I had three 442s (always two at one time) my junior and senior years, and was able to at least hold onto one.  The kitty was Charlie.  He enjoyed sleeping in all our cars during the summer when we would leave the windows down.  I would periodically take him for drives to the gas station in the Olds (the '68 and my other '70s).  The looks from the other motorists seeing him perched on the armrest peering through the window was priceless.  He would get jolted when I would open the secondaries and that Q-jet "sound" engulfed the car.

The Rallye is kinda funny in that I would've assumed a non-woodgrain dash and rubber floor mat to accompany the no-vent dash option, but that's not the case.  I'm somewhat inclined to replace the carpet with the rubber floor mat and remove the woodgrain to fully capture the post-coupe "strippo" look.  I think it'd be pretty cool considering the car's flamboyant nature.
