62223609-0062-47BC-9F3F-9B7205836A12.jpegYup the cats out of the bag.
Well yesterday 7/7/2018 I finally made it to a Drag Strip to run the Beast down the 1/4 Mile. I loaded the car with some tools etc and headed out the 62 miles to Milan Dragway. I had a great ride there in the morning and saw my neighbors 69 300 convertible he sold to his brother on his way back home to Wisconsin on my way down. I was keeping an eye on my gauges and my ears open for anything out of the ordinary. No problems. When I arrived I went right to tech. They asked me a few Questions—Overflow bottle yup Battery in the trunk yup. Is it secure. Yup. Master shutoff yup. That was it he signed my card and off I went to find a parking spot. I unloaded the car and let some air out it the rear tires. I’m ready to go. I missed the first call of test n tune so I milled around the pits and ran across a friend of a friend of mine with his vette. Long story short we got the call for the 2nd round and I made a beeline for the staging lanes. It didn’t take long and I was able to make my first pass with the new driveline. The car hooked really good and I was not disappointed with the cars performance! I made my way to get my time slip and the younger guy at the shack asked me Is that a Biscayne? Yes I said, he had a look in his eye like he was a sedan fan! Then he told me my time. I don’t know who was more shocked me or him. I told him it was my first pass with the car and he was like really? The car ran 12.34 @110.26 I was ecstatic. My guess I’ve had in the back of my mind was 12.30. I have never run a Pro Tree and my reaction was .826 asleep at the wheel lol. My 2nd pass later in the day was 12.40@109.89 my reaction was a bit better .197 much better but room for improvement (more seat time)! The story gets better- on the way home on the highway at a junction of 6 lanes I’m trying to move to the right lanes as I only want to run 70. I see a Van rapidly approaching so I wait for it to pass. He pulls next to me and slows down come to find out I know him through a friend of mine. He puts his hand to his ear and I gave her a little throttle lol! I arrive home and Julie and I were talking a bit and she stops me and said someone is here. I look and it’s 2 of my buddys, one of which helped guide me through my cars transformation. We were talking and he said he had phone calls about me meeting his buddy at the track and the other seeing me on the highway lol. Damn small world ! What a great day!!! Anyway here’s some pics and a video of my 2nd run. I don’t have a first run video (operator error of my GoPro)

Thanks for tuning in,Enjoy

Larry

Awesome!! Very impressive for an "as driven" 2 ton beast and good 60' time. Need some details, what converter are you running? Are you shifting or letting the computer do it? What RPM are you shifting and RPM across the finish line? Very well done, thanks for sharing your journey. What's next?

Pat

Thanks Geof much appreciated. I was pleasantly surprised with how the car ran. This is the first time I have had the opportunity to really open her up. The license plate holder is a repoduction of the ones Redford Speed use to have I always wanted one and never could find one until a couple years ago. The real ones were diecast the repop one must be the race version it’s plastic.

Pat
I’m running a Circle D converter it’s there Pro Billet 245mm (9 3/4”)3c. 3600 stall, single disc lock up.
I let the computer do the shifting i can’t really do much with it unless I switch to a manual valve body or do some trans and computer work. I still have not finished with the street/drive ability tuning. On the run in the video the trans short shifted the 1-2 upshift. My first run it did not. I have talked to my tuner about this and it will be looked at the next round of tuning. I believe the shift points are set at 6500 RPM. My tach is not functional rite now. I had it rebuilt and the people who did it set it up for a V-8 pulse width. I need to get it set up for a 4 cyl pulse width as I’m sure you know that’s what these L/S engines use. I believe that the computer can be changed to work with my tach as well so I have some options. I’m going through the traps at roughly 6000 RPM. The tires I am using are a bit taller than I originally geared the car for.
Future plans are as follows
A bit more tire pressure to see if I can get some wheel speed out of it on the launch. The car dead hooked and bogged a bit, I could hear it on my video.
I am going to experiment with a lower RPM launch to flash the converter
I will be removing the front sway bar links.
I’m thinking these will help my 60’ times and shave a bit off the ET.
A dose of nitrous is in order when I’m a little more familiar with the car and what it’s doing.
Thanks for asking I really appreciate your interest in my setup and the questions and comments.

Larry

I agree with you letting the computer shift. It will do it much more precisely than you. When I run my Studebaker I do the same. Sounds like you are geared just about right. I do wonder if a little bit shorter tire might help, both with gear and wheel speed. The ones you have are pretty huge. Would also attract less attention for the sleeper element. Will flashing the converter be effective on a pro tree? I used to do that with my old bracket car, but with the sportsman tree you could anticipate that last yellow.

I bet with some tuning and tweaking you will be knocking on eleven's door

Thanks for letting us live vicariously through you!
