Cola and aluminum foil on bumper rust

I'm a sucker for car shows, and lately it seems like everybody and their brother have their own car show.  Last night I tuned in to Car Rescue on Velocity, and it was entertaining.  A handful of folks go rescue car projects that have fallen behind/ stalled.  It's not restorations, so much as get it on the road again.  They were working on a 63 Ford and while cleaning up the exterior they used cola and aluminum foil to rub out the rust speckles on the rear bumper.  My Cougar bumpers were in similar condition so today I figured what the hay, I'll try it out.  I did it and I like the results!  Now, keep in mind, it is what it is, a rusted out parts car that needs major work, and by no means is this anything more then temporary cleanup for a driver-status car, but it makes a nice difference.  I put the cola in an old dog bowl, and crinkled up some aluminum foil and started on the bumper.  It cleaned up the rust marks, leaving behind the base metal, but that is much less noticeable then those ugly rust spots.

The right side shows how the whole bumper looked, before I tried it.  Left side is the results.  Pretty cool.  This is probably an old used car sales lot trick I'm thinking.

That is quite a noticeable difference. I have never heard of that technique before.
